Thomas Street Tavern a hot spot

Dozens of readers have suggested Thomas Street Tavern in Plaza-Midwood. Last night, I finally had the chance to check it out.

Inside the brick building, classic rock played on the jukebox. Vaulted ceilings with exposed beams give the tavern an open feel and slightly reminded me of a large barn, minus the horses and pigs, of course. Photos of Elvis, Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Holly hang on the walls, a mural of street cafes and shops above the bar and there's beer memorabilia all over the place.

The tavern was a completely relaxed atmosphere where old friends gathered for drinks after work. A couple members of an adult softball league sat at the bar and enjoyed burgers and beer.

Near the entrance there's a pool table to keep patrons entertained. Two couples played a round and one woman had a blast dancing around her boyfriend, trying to distract him. I didn't see a single person that wasn't in a good mood in the place. I started to understand why so many of you had steered me in the tavern's direction.

The night I visited, I had a glass of La Terre Cabernet for an expected $6. All beers on tap were $4.50. Aside from reasonable drink prices, the tavern also had a wide menu that includes favorites such as cheese fries, sirloin sandwiches, melts, burgers and hot dogs. Prices were extremely reasonable and ranged anywhere from $6 to $10.

If bar goers want to relax outside, the tavern also offers a some seating out front and a spacious area out back with games and comfy seating.

  1. Always a favorite but can be a little crowded on a Sat night. Out back is relaxing in the spring and fall. Hot this time of year but they do have water misters for you. You can't beat this place for a beer w/friends.

  2. 4.50 for a beer is NOT reasonable. Also, when are you going to review something cool, like Uptown Cabaret. I hear they have fantastic lunches there, plus your boyfriend can get a lap dance while you're doing your review.

  3. Thanks for the memories. Met my wife there 6 years ago right by the jukebox. Just had our first child together.

  4. How do you go to T St and not mention the patio? How many bars have ping pong tables with stadium seating?

  5. "How do you go to T St and not mention the patio? How many bars have ping pong tables with stadium seating?"........Have to agree! The back patio is awesome and a one of a kind with fire pit, back bar, two ping pong tables in their own section...etc. Patio alone should have garnered more attention and write-up from ole Brit.

  6. Might I suggest Harvey's in Huntersville. Harvey's is owned by App State grads, and as a fellow alum it's a great plact for Mountaineers to visit. They have good beers on tap, great food, open rooms, TV's, live music, pool tables, etc. They also have a Sunday Brunch.

  7. You forgot to mention the rampant drug use at Thomas Street...

  8. I would put this place right up there with the Penguin --- and that is not a good thing especially when you don't have the 2 hrs that it takes to get served @ either place during lunch.

  9. $4.50 for a draft beer.. was that a joke.. T-street is definately not cool enough for those type of beer prices..

  10. Beers are overpriced there. Used to have a bad reputation for drug use, not sure now that they got all the bad PR when the police cheif's daughter went missing after leaving there and all that. Agree with above poster about Cabaret, but Mens Club is better. Nicer venue, more room, hotter dancers, and better food.

  11. Slowest wait staff in Charlotte. I've been there twice recently and both times the same service....Lousy!!!

  12. Thomas Street is my home away from home...I love the good & the bad, glad to know they don't discriminate against their eclectic clientele!

By the way...don't believe ALL the "news." They never print or tell stories about when all charges are dropped for lack of evidence. Not everyone can be perfect citizens, police or reporters ... are you always perfect and unforgivable?

Give Thomas Street a try, it's always nice to be welcomed there, regardless of who you are.

  13. $4.50 for a beer?

    Thanks, anyway.

  14. "You forgot to mention the rampant drug use at Thomas Street".......Yea sure, like this is the only bar/tavern in town on any given night that may or may not have a few patrons high on something. Look, you have no clue what you're talking about so keep it zipped. I've been in T St. more times than I can count and have never, repeat NEVER been solicited to buy or partake-(drugs) with anybody there. Your comment is off base and out of line. Rampant? Please.

  15. If you are not a regular good luck getting waited on
wait staff to busy being cool, food mediocre at best .
Apparently it is a good place to score some dope.

  16. One of the most overrated bars in Charlotte.

  17. No mention of the Boyfriend? Is there trouble in paradise?

  18. "Might I suggest Harvey's in Huntersville." Might I suggest NO. As in no one wants to go to Huntersville to hang out. Take care of your alumni networking functions on your own time. Or when you're shining my shoes Overstreet.

  19. 4.50 is a six pack in my book- over priced and over-rated- another "chic" place for the increasingly tiring bohemian want-to-be's who inhabit plaza midwood.

  20. Also app state is terrible

  21. Why are people complaing about $4.50 for a beer? If you think that is too much then that bar is better off without you.
Maybe the hicks should save up your money for some teeth.

  22. Isnt that where the chick got offed?

  23. Completely mediocre frat bar that everybody thinks is the deal. Perfect example of why this town will always be stuck in Middlesburg. Ooh, a patio with ping pong... wonder if they have cornhole? I'll ask my pals Chelsea and Taylor McWhitebread, they should know.

Seriously Brittany, please branch out from white middle class establishments. It's getting insulting.

  24. Go to Thomas St. Tavern and enjoy your drug of choice!

  25. Mediocre frat bar? Holy cow you couldn't be any further off the mark than that one man. Some of these comments are comical and obviously from posers who have managed to split my sides with laughter.

  26. It's obvious most of the people here posting drank all the negativity out of the water today.

  27. You totally skipped over the best part, the outside. Weak. I think we need someone with more than 6 months of bar experience to report on these things.

    ReplyDelete
  28. What crappy beers are you cheap people drinking? GL go back to g-town and listen to the backstreet boys! no one in p - midwood wants you there, trust me .

  29. If thomas street is "chic" , then I am dripping in diamonds and chanel! Just a cool place . . Maybe your not. Go back to mallard creek!

  30. Whoever is complaining about $4.50 beers needs to get out a bit more often. We aren't talking bud light here, and this isn't a grocery store - try finding a Stella Artois on tap for less anywhere else. Maybe $4.00, but that is the best you will find.

  31. I'm still waiting to read about The Double Door and The Comet Grill.

For service and food quality, not to mention Lenny Federal's band playing on Friday nights, The Comet puts Thomas Street to shame.

  32. Thomas Street is a neighborhood fixture for us folks that live in Plaza-Midwood, Elizabeth, Merry Oaks and Commonwealth. We're not looking for 1 dollar beer, gourmet
food or French waiters, we are looking for a relaxed place to hang out for a few hours with old and new friends. Plus it is right next to "The Dish", how cool is that !
