For those of you looking for a decent sports bar in town, Growler's Pourhouse in NoDa is worth checking out. Behind a medieval, wooden castle door, bar hoppers can find six flat screen televisions tuned to any big game on that night.
Exposed brick and dark wood gives the bar a rustic character and sets the tone for a laid back environment. High-top tables and booths allow for enough seating to fit large groups, and the open floor plan keeps patrons at a comfortable distance.
Growler's offers specials throughout the week, including dollar PBRs Monday through Friday; solid gold Mondays at 11 p.m., where a DJ plays hits from the '50s,'60s and '70s; free beer education sessions the first Tuesday of every month; Wednesdays are half price cans and spinnin' that funky soul at 10 p.m.; Thursdays are oyster shooters; Fridays are gallery crawls on the first and third Friday of every month; Saturday a DJ starts at 10 p.m.; and Sunday, Fat Tire is on special for $2.50.
The bar is also known for what it likes to call "beer food." Cheese and beer pairings, nachos, house-made sausages and brats, oysters, shrimp and a variety of dips are available to diners.
While at Growler's, three of my friends took advantage of the $1 PBR and I opted for a dirty martini to try something different. It cost about $6, but was worth it because it wasn't made too strong and had just enough olive juice.
Overall, we had a great time at the bar watching a few games and it is a chill place to catch up with friends. For a relaxed sports bar experience, visit Growler's Pourhouse early in the night, because around 10 or 11 p.m. people starting stacking up at the door.
