Get your creative juices flowing at Evening Muse

For my last entry, I wanted to travel back to my favorite area of Charlotte: NoDa. This artsy community is home to unique bar finds, friendly people and good food.

At the corner of North Davidson and 36th streets sits the Evening Muse. This venue has been drawing in crowds for years and appeals to local musicians. For those not wishing to showcase their artistic abilities, it's a relaxing atmosphere to sit back and appreciate independent artists.

The Muse has been open for about a decade now and has catered to thousands of independent music acts throughout the years. The stage has hosted genres ranging from acoustic, reggae and country and blues to alternative, pop and rock.

And while NoDa is my favorite neighborhood to visit, especially for a late dinner with friends, I had never been into the Muse until now. But I've always noticed the young, artsy crowd spilling out of the venue and onto the curb.

The night I visited I heard an alternative band that was actually pretty good. One great option about the Muse is that concerts are open to all ages, unless specifically noted. This opens the range of talent coming through the doors and allows a younger generation to be exposed to the creative outlet.

Inside, exposed brick walls are home to featured artwork from area talents and a stage is set up to host the next gig. A few round tables sit next to large widows looking onto the street for those patrons who want to relax with a beer or glass of wine.

Those interested in viewing artwork can also check out the venue's gallery crawl on the first and third Friday of every month.

Der cum'0n out to concord or fort mill fer a good time. We gots lots of fun bars fer pretty gurls. We got $1 dollar budweiser and lifted trucks with deer horn stickers. It may be a hike for anyone but people that can't afford to live in Charlotte. But you might be able to be dumb and poor enough to like one of these towns. Go garth brooks

Umm... no mention of the band's name? Rookie Journalism.

I never thought of the Muse as a bar because it's a music venue. The fact that you don't talk about the drinks at all seems to support that. Additionally, their covers for certain shows (namely local bands) are ridiculously high-like last week's show with Birds & Arrows and Reeve Coobs-no way was that worth a $10 cover, and the same show at Snug Harbor would've set you back maybe $6.

Did your boyfriend go???

So many cool places in Charlotte and youve only scratched the surface. Please continue the blog!

You are correct, and at Snug Harbor they'll even give you a pillow for biting down on later.

I agree with Anon 3:15. I was already familiar with most of the places Brittany visited, but when you think about the places that she hasn't yet visited, you do realize that she has only scratched the surface with just 30 bars. There are a ton of great bars in Charlotte. I say keep the blog up after the 30th bar!

The Muse, is probably my favorite venue, in Charlotte. Other than great music, they do have a pretty good "bar", thus, I agree with Brit's classification. I was introduced to Founder's Breakfast Stout, there, and have enjoyed a lot of great music! Hope to see you all there, soon!

"The night I visited I heard an alternative band that was actually pretty good." What band? It means a lot to the bands to get mentioned anywhere, especially when someone enjoys what they've heard. You never know who you could be listening to in these small clubs, and where they'll end up.

I think only paying $10 to see Reeve Coobs is highway robbery! She is worth $100 to hear her melodic and clensing voice.

The Evening Muse is my favorite music venue within the Charlotte area. While they do serve beer and wine, it is the music that draws the crowd.

Laurie - dead on: how are we supposed to know who to look for unless you tell us their name, Brittany?

30b in 30d part dos would be nice. I'm sure you've learned one should list prices, the weekly specials of food and drink and entertainment, type of live music with names or dj or jukebox, the clientele. What's unique about it. Beautiful patio? Crummy patio? Game tables? Not so good food but great drinks or craft beers. Or vice versa. Should we take a flashlight to read the menu? Stuff we need to know. I know you're young, but branch out to something other than college hangouts. Take your Mom along to a place that might be more suited to an older crowd. Learned from your blog that I had a misconception of a few establishments. Good luck in your writing career.

TXTransplant - good ideas! I'd like to know more of the non-collegy places, myself

No, I think we've had enough of this blog/facebook posting.

As one mentioned... high fees for local artists that are not worth it. Yet I have tried to get several indie acts in that are award winning singer/songwriters from Nashville, Atlanta, and Austin (all genres) but they will not get back with me or with them.

To me the music operations person is very lacking @ responding and that seems to be very arrogent. I am ready to start a listening room in south charlotte were musicians will be responded to and respected.

This poor girl....The Muse is not a Bar, its a music venue...Now Solstice is a Bar, Growlers is a bar, & Jack Beagles is a bar. Maybe one day she will understand.
