Young professionals unwind at Dixie's

On this month's journey I'm on a search for bars where people can have fun and to offer a taste of what you can expect at different locations. Along the way, I've been told by multiple people that the Cajun-style bar Dixie's Tavern is a Charlotte must.

When I visited the bar on East Seventh Street I found a plain, red brick building that lacked attention-grabbing signs or lights. But Dixie's was definitely promising because the outside patio tables were overflowing and scents of spicy po'boys and jambalaya wafted onto the street to lure in customers.

Hopeful, my boyfriend and I walked in and took a seat at the dark wooden bar near the middle of the tavern. We quickly discovered one of the best bars I've been directed to in the area.

On a Monday night around 11, the tavern was swarming with young professionals. After a long day at work, many of the men still sported loosened ties while most of the women had traded their heels for comfy flats.

Karaoke started at 9 p.m. and went until 2 a.m., and it only took a few beers and probably a couple flavored martinis for a handful of women to belt out Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."

It was pretty amusing to listen to the amateurs scream-sing while sitting at the bar and enjoying a Stella Artois. Luckily, the Stella helped mellow out the off-key notes that would make a dog howl.

The crowd was taking full advantage of Dixie's Monday Funday service industry night. The tavern offers $2 Miller Lights, $3 kamikaze shots, $2.50 drafts, $3 Soco and lime, $3 Skyy and $5.95 Cajun quesadillas.

Aside from drink specials, the tavern also serves up a full menu, including muffalettas, crawfish, gator bites, ribs and wraps. Most items on the menu are reasonably priced and range from $6 to $20.

For a budget-conscious student crowd looking for a weekend bar, Dixie's has no cover on Friday and Saturday nights. Specials on the weekend include the $2 beer of the month and a $3 shot special.

Is there a word limit on this daily article? It feels like you're getting closer to giving us what we want, but still coming up a little short.

I know you can't taste all the food, but tell us what you had and how it tasted. Ask some other patrons what the best. No, this isn't a restaurant review, but having something good to munch might be a factor in a bar.

Find out what beers are offered here that aren't offered elsewhere. Or heck, just tell us how many taps there are, and how many of them are non-macro selections. See if they have a house specialty (bloody mary, special martini, awesome long island, etc.).

She's getting better. Probably her best post to date.

Not a bad post. I've been reading this blog since the beginning and it is getting better. I read the Charlotte John blog...and this one. Both are VERY different...can't stress that enough haha. Not bad though.

Please venture outside of Uptown!

Yep! Getting better! Atta girl.

I guess we need to re-define "young professional", because you won't find this 26 year old professional drinking until 11pm on a Monday.

Okay, we're supposed to believe you have never been in Dixie's? You're a young attractive female, recent college grad, have boyfriend in tow and you have never been in this place. Also after listing the menu items, this would have been a good place to insert "I had the deliciously prepared whatever while my boyfriend enjoyed the eye popping whatever"

This blog isn't about the suburbs she will continue to check downtown inner neighborhoood bars. If you want lake norman reviewed please read your own towns paper.

Yes, there you go Brittany. The vitals, food and drink specials, etc were finally included. I think someone else said it too, I do feel like just a litte something is missing but I cant put my finger on it. Otherwise, this is much improved and I thank you.

My guess is she's not getting paid much to write this blog and eating out every night for a month might be a little pricey for a recent grad. She's probably not reviewing the food because she's not ordering any.

So every bar so far is great. Wow. How about a little more analysis. What you found good, but also what was less than good. Don't have to throw the bar under the bus, but move this beyond a facebook or four square post.

I forget... what day are we on?

I've been to Dixie's two dozen times. EVERY TIME there is a fight in the parking lot and it takes 15-30 minutes to get a beer from the bar. Terrible place unless you like to be treated rudely, get in a fight and not be served well. What a dump.....

I agree with 11:23...Lake Norman is not in Charlotte so why should she go to a bar way up there?

Ate there once-the worst wings in town-tasted like they were made six days ago and continually reheated

"scents of spicy po'boys and jambalaya wafted onto the street to lure in customers."

Doubtful. I'm a native of Southern Louisiana and actually do love a night out at Dixie's. But, I can promise you this; you don't go to Dixie's becuase you smell spicy po-boys or jambalaya my friend.

Anon 2:18 let me get this straight: Dixie's is dangerous, service is slow, and the staff is rude, and the place is a dump . . . yet you've been there two dozen times?

Good job, Brittany! I love reading these and getting a taste of where to go in Charlotte. I'm moving there with my girlfriend next summer so it will be nice to know where we should visit.

If you love your little watering hole out in greater Lizard Lick that's great. This is a blog from a newcomer to Charlotte, experiencing the bar scene. You should write an op-ed piece for the Lizard Lick Gazette.

How bout some Epicentre bars. Like Wild Wing, Mez or Whiskey River. Its called Epicentre because its the center of Charlotte, where everybody who's anybody is.

good grief... the smut patrol is out.

Anon 4:13 - She's a girl and she's under 30. Of course she has a boyfriend. All girls do. They can't be alone or just hangout with friends and have fun.

If you hang out at Dixie's enough, you might get your picture in the Observer's Party Pix feature.

If you're a guy and you see the camera pointed at you, make sure to make some dumb hand sign.

If you're a girl, remember to giggle and look all pouty-sexy. Bonus points for low cut dresses or semi-unbuttoned blouses.

Your mother would be proud of you for such a fine Professional story of 30 bars in 30 days.....especially is she is an alcoholic wine-O

Stella is average at best. Ayinger is what you need!

Wait a minute...you still haven't explained "the priest" comment from the Ri Ra post.

Did you think we forgot?

Not knowing who the statue represents is forgivable. Not caring to find out is unforgivable for a "freelance reporter."

I can't think of many places in Charlotte I'd rather go less. All those jerkoff$ hanging out there on Sundays playng corn hole before the Steelers games. Quick, name more than 3 players.
