If you're looking for a local bar "where new friends meet," Ed's Tavern in Dilworth is the place to be.
I knew it was a good sign when I had to drive up and down the line of parking spaces beside Ed's trying to find a spot for a few minutes. The place was brimming with bar goers.
The first thing I noticed when I stepped into Ed's with my friend Katy was a loud packed house and a man to my left rattling off trivia questions to the rowdy group. A short guy with a Jersey accent and a draft beer in his hand shouted an answer from the corner. We made our way to the back of the bar, hoping to find a seat.
It took a few minutes to squeeze by the crowd who were mostly standing at this point. I only saw three empty bar chairs in the entire venue that night, so if you want to grab a seat for trivia, make sure you get there early.
As for the drink selection, the bar has 25 beers on tap and 50 bottle selections to keep patrons happy while they play games or trivia throughout the week. There were also two patios to check out when the inside is overflowing with people like the night I visited Ed's.
As for entertainment in the bar, most of the center high tables in the venue had checkerboard games embedded in the wood. To the left of the entrance, there were also pool tables and at the back of the bar, patrons can find skeeball and a boxing game.
If that doesn't do the trick, the tavern's 13 televisions tuned into the biggest sporting events should keep your attention.
Bar hoppers can also participate in some of the tavern's nightly entertainment. Tuesdays at the bar are open mic nights at 10 p.m., while Wednesdays and Thursdays offer trivia and name that tune at 8:30 p.m.
Ed's also offers specials every night. Some of the continuous specials throughout the week include $1.50 Coors, PBR, Miller High Life, $2.50 any kind bottles and Iron City. Daily specials and menu items can be found on the tavern's website.

Ed's is a great spot. $1.50 Coors light drafts every day, and the buffalo wings at Ed's are the best in Charlotte. I just wish they still had disco fries on the menu...
Disco Fries are back!
24 bars. 17 Uptown or within one mile, 3 UNCC, 4 NoDa. Apparently, there are only 3 neighborhoods in Charlotte that are allowed to sell alcohol.

No, there's only 3 neighborhoods in Charlotte worth visiting.
Who wants to drink out by the cookie cutter houses and apartments? Not me. Who wants to drink where the soccer moms rule? Not me. Who wants to hang where the popped collar boat guys drink? Not me.
I'm gonna have to agree with Anon 1:59 on this one. If I'm going out, it's going to be in one of the following neighborhoods: Uptown, Dilworth, Myers Park, Southend, Noda, Plaza Midwood, Montford, or Southpark.
By the way, I'm a 34 year old professional and all of my friends (who are also professionals, both married and single) only frequent those neighborhoods as well. When we figure out where we're meeting for dinner or drinks, Ballantyne, Huntersville, Matthews, Lake Norman, and the like NEVER enter the equation.
We don't want you in the LKN area anyways.
You should have turned around and taken a picture of the microbrew draft board. A great selection of microbrews always on tap at Eds!
I agree. This guy who keeps track of the neighborhoods clearly has an inferiority complex because he wishes he lived closer. Next time The Observer wants someone to do 30 crappy bars in crappy neighborhoods, we'll nominate you. Until then, zip it.
hey sissy!!! when you coming out to concord to check out our bars! we got some of the best watering holes around lady! git your stuff together and come out to Concord mills fur a good time!!
I agree with anon 1:59 also. only neighborhoods worth a damn.
What about Providence Rd Sundries, the original preppy bar in CLT?
Or Sywen Pub the "other" MP bar?
In the meantime, who wants to hang out in the uptown neighborhoods, Dilworth, Plaza Midwood or NoDa (where the weird people hang out) and be around a bunch of party-all-the-time frat guys with chicks who have an ambition to make the Charlotte Observer party pics and dress all nasty with a bunch of junk in the trunk! No thank you!
Ed's has the coldest beer in town!!
If you're going to review bars in Charlotte then don't completely ignore entire parts of Charlotte. Huntersville, Matthews, etc are cities OTHER than Charlotte so fine. But not one location in SouthPark OR Ballantyne or Blakeney....come on. Those are Charlotte addresses and believe it or not some people actually live there. And some are even smart enough to know that (1) uptown is WAY overrated and (2) not worth an expen$ive cab ride home after drinking.
UNCC and NoDa need to be taken off any list of areas in town with good bars.
What a bunch of losers all of you are...arguing about the best place to waste you life away. What self importance. What pretention. Loseers...all of you. Except for you Brittany...you're cute!
Eds is great for meeting aging women (aka girls in their late 20s) who appear classy but in reality have major self esteem issues. Especially fun around closing time.
I agree with anon 1:59 also. I'm 35 and my friends have similar taste. We also don't frequent Ballantyne, Huntersville or Lake Norman due to outrageous cab fares just to get to those venues. If you're going out just for dinner and a lot of drinking uptown is one of the more centralized locations that allows you to hit more establishments without needing to drive all over the place.

Since when is spending time with friends "wasting your life away"?? I spend most of my days in the office, then hit the gym afterwards....sorry if I would like to meet up and be SOCIAL every once in awhile in a venue NOT located in cookie cutter suburbia! I dunno, sounds like the pot calling the kettle black to me.

Not one location reviewed in Ballantyne or Blakeney because it's not worth the drive! What do you want her to review, Ballantyne Cosmos? Really? I would agree with you, Uptown is overrated but certainly not the plethora of older neighborhoods surrounding it.
I live in Ballantyne and we go to the bars in Plaza-Midwood, NoDa, & Elizabeth because they are great places to hang out and have fun. If i want a quick bite then i stay in my area, but there is always something ggreat to choose all over Charlotte, except UNCC area...
