Growler's Pourhouse caters to sports fans

For those of you looking for a decent sports bar in town, Growler's Pourhouse in NoDa is worth checking out. Behind a medieval, wooden castle door, bar hoppers can find six flat screen televisions tuned to any big game on that night.

Exposed brick and dark wood gives the bar a rustic character and sets the tone for a laid back environment. High-top tables and booths allow for enough seating to fit large groups, and the open floor plan keeps patrons at a comfortable distance.

Growler's offers specials throughout the week, including dollar PBRs Monday through Friday; solid gold Mondays at 11 p.m., where a DJ plays hits from the '50s,'60s and '70s; free beer education sessions the first Tuesday of every month; Wednesdays are half price cans and spinnin' that funky soul at 10 p.m.; Thursdays are oyster shooters; Fridays are gallery crawls on the first and third Friday of every month; Saturday a DJ starts at 10 p.m.; and Sunday, Fat Tire is on special for $2.50.

The bar is also known for what it likes to call "beer food." Cheese and beer pairings, nachos, house-made sausages and brats, oysters, shrimp and a variety of dips are available to diners.

While at Growler's, three of my friends took advantage of the $1 PBR and I opted for a dirty martini to try something different. It cost about $6, but was worth it because it wasn't made too strong and had just enough olive juice.

As the night went on and we watched a hockey game on TV, more sports fans filled the bar. We noticed that Growler's seems to attract a crowd in their mid-to-late 20s and early 30s.

Overall, we had a great time at the bar watching a few games and it is a chill place to catch up with friends. For a relaxed sports bar experience, visit Growler's Pourhouse early in the night, because around 10 or 11 p.m. people starting stacking up at the door.

Why would you go to Growlers to drink PBR?

I think Growlers is anything but a sports bar.

To get a beer that doesn't require a second mortgage. The place is so pretentious.

If you are describing a great place to watch a game and drink a cheap PBR, then you are describing Vinnie's or Kennedy's. What makes Growlers a unique bar in CLT is their craft beer selection, not the number of TVs on the walls. If you talk to any of the employees they are experts and are more than happy to recommend some of their on tap selections to try.

I agree with Bri. Sports bar is one of the last descriptions I would apply to Growler's. The name of the bar should give you an indication as to what this place is about. The selling point for me is that they have taps devoted to specific styles of beer (IPA, stout, brown, etc.) To have an article about this bar and not mention craft beer is puzzling.

Growler's could lose the flickering zombie distractors for all I care... their beer selection is great and the bartenders are knowledgeable.

Tell us the good stuff like how many times you get hit on, hook up, get drunk, etc...

Yeah, sorry but Brittany missed the mark here. The thing that makes Growler's great is the craft beer, homemade sausage, and the fact that you can actually buy "growlers" to go. But I can't say it would be on my list of bars to go watch a game.

You missed badly on this one. The headline alone is head-shake worthy.

Brush yourself off, pay better attention, and perhaps you do better the next time.

...4 people go to Growlers to review it and no one orders a craft brew....lol

Do you get hammered at any point during you research?

Just because you were able to watch a replay of a hockey game (there's no hockey in July) does not make it a sports bar :)

You need to check out Pizza Peel over in the Cotswold area. They have every type of beer you can think of as well as very good wines and the food is outstanding.

What about the 1937 Beer Engine that serves up cask beer? This is NOT a sports bar. You are doing it an injustice to refer to it as such.
Not trying to be jerky, but you may want to ask the bartenders, owners, etc.. what they are trying to represent. This will give you an idea on what they are trying to achieve and allow the readers to know what they are about.

martini at a craft beer establishment.... that is like going to a steakhouse and ordering the bbq chicken breast... anybody care to vote on if she knew what a growler was before she visited?

Sports bar with 6 TVs? Swing and miss.

The title on their website mentions craft beer, the first line on the site mentions it. They have a beer engine for serving beer from a cask. They serve several local beers. No where do you even mention craft beer. Your buddies buy PBR because it's cheap? It's cheap anywhere and available anywhere. Why on earth would anyone go to a craft beer joint and NOT order craft beer?

You owe it to Growlers to go back and write an addendum for this blog entry.

Since this was the first 'story' that brought the craft beer folks to knowledge of your task, might as well start here.

For starters, your blog implies that you are doing 30 bars in 30 days throughout the month of July. Though when you look at it, that does not seem to be true given you took the 31st day(July 4th) off which was the first Monday in the month. So really you are doing 30 days of mediocre at best writing about 30 bars.

The fact that you and your friends want to go to these various establishments and order what you do is actually quite fine. Example, you went to Growlers and ordered a martini and your friends took advantage of the $1 PBR special. For all those who say thats just plain crazy, its possibly even crazier as I get the idea she is from Asheville. While it is on her to do her research and know what the bars specialty is, its also on Growlers staff to educate her as to what it is they do that makes them special. I do not think for one second that the staff at Growlers did a single thing to educate her or even attempt to up-sell her and her friends. They are clueless when it comes to beer.

If any of you go to the Growlers website, they themselves actually state that they are a great place for sports fans to watch any of the big games.

These 'articles' are great for the bulk Charlotte because they severely lack any substance other than promotion of every bar being great, having cheap Bud and Miller specials for the collar poppers and PBR for the hipsters.

As for me, I am officially hooked on this train wreck as if it is the next episode of The Real Housewives of whatever. I just cannot look away from the mass of discrepancies, horrible grammar, and the fact that she seems to know what to expect for the price of everything she orders regardless of location or what the drink is.
